What Are the Simple Tenses? (with Examples)

The simple tense is a category of verbtense. It covers the simple past tense, thesimple present tense, and the simple future tense.

The three simple tenses are used to describe actions without specifically stating whether the actions are completed or ongoing.

Be aware that the simple present tense is an oddity. Despite its name, it is not always about activities in the present. The simple present tense can be used for activities that are not currently happening, and it can be used for future events.

Examples of Verbs in the Simple Tense

Here are some examples of verbs in the simple tense:

The Simple Past Tense
The simple past tense describes a completed activity that happened in the past. In other words, the activity started in the past and ended in the past. For example:
  • I went.
  • He saw.
The Simple Present Tense
The simple present tense is a complex tense. It is used:

UseExamples
(1) To describe facts and habits
  • Lee loves pies. (Fact)
  • I play chess on Tuesdays. (Habit)
(NB: These activities do not have to be happening right now.)
(2) To describe scheduled events in the future
  • The plane arrives at 7 o'clock.
  • The sun rises at 0530 tomorrow.
(I know! It's supposed to be the present tense!)
(3) To tell stories (particularly jokes) to make your listener or reader feel more engaged with the story
  • A skeleton walks into a bar and says "Give me a beer and a mop."

The Simple Future Tense
The simple future tense is used for an action that will occur in the future. For example:
  • I will go.
  • He will see.

HOW TO TEACH TENSES

Method 1 of 3:
Teaching Each Time Frame Separately

  1. 1
Provide a quick overview of the entire system of tenses. Draw a grid on the board, for instance, that identifies all the tenses you'll be teaching. To focus on the 9 basic tenses, for instance, write “Past,” “Present,” and “Future” along the top of the grid, “Simple,” “Continuous” (aka “Progressive”), and “Perfect,” along the side, and fill in the 9 grid boxes with examples from a single verb (e.g., saw, see, will see, etc.).[1]
    • There are more than 9 verb tenses in English--some experts say 13, which includes “perfect continuous” as its own tense and “future with 'going to'” as its own category.[2] Others claim there are actually 16 tenses, which includes “perfect progressive” and “conditional” tenses, but starting with the basic 9 is good for an introductory or ESL setting. In a more advanced class, you can also use a grid to introduce 16 verb tenses.[3]
  2. 2
Focus on a single time frame, such as the present. After identifying the entire system, narrow your focus to 1 of the 3 time frames. The present time frame makes a good starting point, since it is often the easiest for students to immediately comprehend.[4]
    • For example: I watch (simple), I am watching (continuous), I have watched (perfect).
    • This runs counter to methods that focus, for example, on the simple past, simple present, and simple future at once (e.g., watched, watch, will watch). The reasoning behind this is the assumption that students are better able to follow along when you stay in a single time frame. After all, when you tell a story, you tend to stay in the same time frame throughout.

Learn Basic Indonesian Tenses with Examples

Halo semuanya! Apa kabar? Welcome back toMasteringBahasa! Not the first, but the best site for you to learn Bahasa Indonesia in days! Today’s article, we will learn together about Indonesian Tenses!
If you had seen our article of Indonesian Verb “To Be”, we had said that there is no concept of tenses in Indonesian language like English has. In English language, you may understand that it has complex 16 tenses which concluded in 4 types: Simple Tenses, Progressive Tenses, Perfect Tenses, and Continuous Tenses. It can also concluded in other 4 types: Present Tenses, Past Tenses, Future Tenses, Past Future Tenses. If you are a native speaker, this will be no brainer for you. But say hello to Indonesian language which does not have any kind of tenses formula!
But still, in Indonesian language, there is concepts of time.
  1. Past Time – Masa Lalu.
  2. Present Time – Masa Sekarang.
  3. Future Time – Masa Depan.
Wait, hold on. Haven’t we said that there is no concept of tenses? Well yeah, but any sentences still need some support, so when a speaker says something, you will know when was the time that he or she mentioned. Let’s say, your friend wants to eat cakue. If he only says “I want to eat Cakue”, you wouldn’t know when exactly he wants to eat that! It maybe now, or later, or tomorrow, or next week! So we need some supports by adding some adjectives too. In our previous article of Indonesian Parts of Speech, we have explained that each parts of speech are important. Please check them out!
